California DMV is impossible. It takes 2 months to get an appointment, if you don’t have one you’re waiting for 4-6 hours. WHAT THE REALLY FUCK?

Anywho, kid got her drivers permit, now I’m downing coffee just trying to stay awake. COFFEE!!!

yeah, i just did that last week, i was able to find an appointment only 1! month away, still spent two hours there

I’m as anti-libertarian as possible, but about a decade ago New Jersey contracted out the DMV to private contractors . I now spend more time gathering the ridiculous number of identity documents New Jersey requires than I do inside the actual DMV. I’ve yet to walk in and not be done in twenty minutes.

They’re blaming the ridiculous wait times on the Real ID. I find that ridiculous since it’s not required for two more years.

Yeah, we didn’t even get the Real ID stuff (maybe later with an appointment ) . Besides, all doing that does is require an extra form or so. It’s not that, I agree.

It’s really weird to remember walking into a building and seeing a good 40 people seated waiting for their names to be called and then being in the same place and having maybe two people in line in front of you. It might have helped that New Jersey has pushed hard for people renewing everything online or through mail.

It’s really frustrating that such horrible service is tolerated. And it’s literally designed into the system, when you build a DMV with a large waiting area, you are essentially admitting that you intend to provide bad service. If you have waits longer than a few minutes, it a sign that you need to have appointments to spread out use (sounds like it is already done where you are), make it possible to do more things online (RealID is apparently bad for this, as it has some additional in-person requirements), extend hours, and/or open more locations. Doing those things is more expensive, but even if they have to raise fees, that would be better than just accepting being awful. There’s always the risk of wasteful spending, but it should be possible to compare yourself against the DMVs in other similar states to get a good picture of whether your money is being well spent.

I tried to get my mom to do it with her renewal but I think they said because her SS card was laminated that they wouldn't accept it. Or something else really stupid.

Check another DMV next time, each office is different in terms of efficiency. Go on Yelp and find the DMV in your area with the least terrible rating.
